In this video, I share my experience of spending a week at Punta Mona, an off-the-grid permaculture ecovillage and hippie commune tucked inside the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica.

Punta Mona is an off-the-grid permaculture community home to hundreds of varieties of tropical fruits, vegetables, nuts, herbs, and medicinal plants. The humans who inhabit this land are passionate about living in harmony with nature and each other.

Founded in 1997 by visionary permaculture expert and plant wizard, Stephen Brooks, Punta Mona was built for sustainability and regenerative living, as a solution to the modern ways of life that are destroying natural systems.

When I saw Punta Mona featured on the hit Netflix show, “Down to the Earth with Zac Efron” I knew it was a place I needed to visit someday. I didn’t expect that day to come so quickly. So when I was invited by my dear friend Kiley to spend New Years’ at Punta Mona, I knew I had to go. I made the decision last minute to take off to Costa Rica after Christmas, to witness how the community at Punta Mona lives.

Throughout my week at Punta Mona, I met so many incredible human beings who care so much about the Planet and being good stewards of this earth. I learned so much about permaculture, sustainability, farming, growing food, off-the-grid living, solar energy, composting, and all sorts of regenerative techniques that allow humans to live more sustainably and in harmony with the land.

  1. I need a sponsor to help me and my daughter get out of the u.s. and to this village ? it’s tough to get the funds to leave with everything going up.

  2. Who put a city in the jungle? Looks like suburbs in works. That OzoneLayer©™® needs help. Intake will have outake; waste is natural. I thought humanity was looking for healthy growth? Zac, is there a waist size for this camp?

  3. Imagine this "off the grid" community had to actually survive with no outside influence. That culture would be a lot less permanent I’ll tell you that. Wannabes

  4. Those wonderful folks are closely living the hippie life of the 1960’s, possibly enjoying nature’s “herbs & spices” a non-issue for me in moderation !

  5. These people still don’t feel real to me. I would not fit in and I’d be challenging their identies all the time, probably get cast out. I doubt I’ll ever find my tribe. I like what the leader says though how can we make the world feel safe and comfortable for all kinds of people. Kids 9 and under are the people that feel the most real to me evryone else just about has adopted a fake identity.

  6. I made the decision to burn 30,000 gallons worth of diesel fuel to go stay in an eco-village thousands of miles away from my home. I always think it’s funny that people think they live ecologically yet they really have massive carbon footprints that they don’t want to admit.

  7. I am 43 and I live in Oxford in England so its a really nice historical city ,I never new that you could live in such a paradise while working with everyone and all self reliant on the jungle I would go there and love it

  8. This gives me mixed feelings. Obviously sounds nice and all, but that isn’t a hippie community. That seems more like an exotic exchange program for well-off, white Americans who want to play hippies while on a sabbatical. Seems nice, but that’s not a hippie community. No real hippie community would take payment for coming there and contributing.

  9. Living the dream!!.. Hoping todo the same asap 🙂 Nothing’s worse than being aware in a "zombified" world..

  10. I also read the comments. nevertheless I think it’s a nice place & I really would like to be, because my life here is pretty lonely & sad. nice place ????

  11. this seems wrong…a bunch of white peoples using costa rica as their paradise. The colonizer mentality is strong with these types of communities and the worst part is that they’re not aware of their harm! (sorry for bad english im not native to the language)

  12. It’s Soo fucking sad to see all this good-for-nothing gringos coming to do absolutely nothing over my country only displacing local people and pretending to be pachaman warriors… I h4t3 them Soo much…

  13. When you could have stayed in your own country and started a communal farm, but you had to colonize another poorer one because it feels like an exotic vacation! Majority of these folks grow out of it and eventually leave; it’s just good memoir material.

  14. Places like this really miss the spiritual part of community. Everything seemed so organized and look to perfect. Looking at it through this video shows lack of spiritual connection instead it gives off controlled vibes. Communities grows and create room for the young ones to grow and take over it to make it fit what they are living. There is something dark about this place. I feel dark energy is everywhere.

  15. I love everything I see in this video but I’m concerned about the things I don’t see. I do not see anybody of my age group like 50s 60s 70s.
    Why is that?

When I look at what Dan and Holly did in Mexico (the Mexico Diaries), I see all age groups included.

  16. As a Costa Rican I’ve always been very hesitant about this type of communities since sometimes it seems like they’re a bit unconcious about the place they are in an the local communities. Seeing this video helps me understand a bit more of the philosophy behind it and it’s honestly pretty impressive in a lot of ways and I love the fact there is a major respect for the earth. That being said, I can’t assume since Costa Ricans can look like any person of the video, but by the surnames and accents I assume they are not that many Costa Ricans in that community which is kind of sad and feels a bit appropiating in a way too.

  17. I get it that they are hippies that want to live in nature more simplistic. But the way they act reminds me of tall kindergartners. No offense of course ment by that. But I think they have an illusion that the world can live like that. But not everywhere is a tropical paradise. Chicago is cold and your not going to have fruit trees growing year round. The middle east/Africa is hot and dry. Non of those places look like there fun to live especially without hearing and air conditioning. Refrigerators lights… The list goes on. But those things cost effort meaning jobs to buy but also create ship and upkeep. People don’t pollute the environment because they want to. They do it to keep there selves and children alive. So unless we murder billions of people and only live in certain areas this life style isn’t realistic. Then you have the question of why this island isn’t open to everyone to just come there. Where is the welfare aspect of it. Let ten thousand poor jobless Spanish people come to the island. It would be a great lesson about welfare to these people once they seen the island picked clean and the Spanish people looking at them as if they need to find a way to continue to provide for them. That means going back to the city to get a job and ship food back to the island. Fantasy are fine until reality catches up. But as for this place congratulations if it works out and the guest don’t have to pay to stay making it a business. The hug reminded me of midsommer where the cult tricked the couple where they got the man to cheat and manipulated the girl to discover it. Then everyone rushed in to hug her giving her a false scene they were there for her.
