#livingabroad #livingincostarica #CostaRicaLife ‘Living Abroad in Costa Rica as Your Authentic Self 😎 Can You?’ So before I got sick last week, I wanted to make this video tying everything together after talk to Devon and Riley. In those videos we discussed living life abroad as a black woman and also a mixed racial couple. Gay also came up because of michael alan of Travel Costa Rica NOW. Through the years I’ve been asked many times about what life was like as a gay gringo living in Costa Rica as well if Costa Rica discriminates against blackness. And what do they think about lesbians? So this video is an overview of how Costa Rica treats, black, gay and lesbians. Do they discriminate? The Costa Rica people do hold a prejudice against a certain people…. hmmmmm, who could that be? Is it one of the above? Is it more prejudice or does Costa Rica actually discriminate? One is a thought, the other an action. There’s a big difference. Well, check out this video, ‘Living Abroad in Costa Rica as Your Authentic Self 😎 Can You?’ and find out.

  1. Dude back in the day they wouldn’t allow the people from Limon to come over the mountains into San Jose. Manual Antonio is gay friendly now but it wasn’t always that way and as the older generation dies off there seems to be a lot less of this going around. Haters are going to hate I would rather congratulat. It really depends on where you are in this country on how you might be treated. Like Bob Marley say," until the color of a man’s skin makes no more significantance then the color of his eyes there is War." Bless Bless 🤙

  2. The whole subject of minorities and how they are viewed and treated is not often covered on CR Expat pages to you are doing service. Thank you.

  3. Hey Mike! Nice to see you back in action! Sounds like you’re still a bit raspy…. take it slow and take care of yourself until you’re back at 100%.
BTW….Love your real estate channel…. so far the properties you have highlighted have been fantastic.

  4. I am a tico living abroad and on my experience everyone has some type of prejudices, heck even my family is prejudices against me because apparently I have money 😂…. But yes everyone has some type of prejudices is just human nature even myself 😉.

  5. They descriminate themselves man, why a BLACK radio station??? Why not a RADIO station, Gringo, or blues or anything else. Well, when you identify yourself as being different, people will look at you that way.

  6. You are so on point about the Tico prejudice against Nicaraguans. I was going to mention it if you hadn’t covered it in the video. I can’t count the times I saw a crime news story while there and would hear the word "Nicaraguans" muttered by watching Ticos.

  7. Interesting. The guy who does maintenance for me around my house is Nicaraguan. I’ve noticed that when he and I go to the ferretería, the staff treat him like he’s not up to their level. It’s made me uncomfortable a couple times especially at the DoIt Center. I wondered if this was the case – mystery solved.

  8. Costa Rica learns a lot fromUS tourism mindset and I’m quite sure the racisms stems from that, and trying to fit in with their customers! Great share here its not discussed much, but i call out my taco neighbors on being racists haha. they just need to be aware and can adjust their perspective. mindfulness seems to be higher here than other countries 🙂 thanks for all the solid info prior to my move here and for providing a unique perspective from the fluffy fluff vloggers

  9. Racism, classicism and discrimination is definitely alive and well here in Costa Rica. Very subtle. We have felt the behavior and the moment we start speaking English, the behavior stops. So bizarre.

  10. We are all prejudice to some extent and always more comfortable with the familiar than we are with the different. This is human nature. We like these types of shortcuts on decision making. Another shortcut would be judging you on the company you keep. Spanish speakers have this expression: dime con quién andas, y te diré quién eres.

  11. Funny way people talk – about people. Sure you’ve got the estates locked in your sites. Get the word play there?

  12. Some of the thhings are facts Michael, even though someone might see racism or descrimination. I’ll give you an example. Vancouver BC Canada. If an accident happens , 90% chances are that a chinese is involved and 90% chances are that he or she is at fault. They can’t drive. IS A FACT!

  13. You are wrong when you say that the Tico sees Nicaraguans as inferior. The Tico does not look down on anyone in an inferior way, we make fun of you ”yes”, we can talk behind your back ”yes”, we have the right to not like someone ”yes”. However, I agree that some ticos have certain discrimination against the Nicaraguan due to historical events that began to happen way before you emigrated to Costa Rica and even so, 20% of the population in CR is Nicaraguan and they continue to enter the country everyday and without fear and with hopes of a better future that CR provides to them.

  14. ok Michael I want to tell you something else, you say you lived there 16 year or more and sometimes they do express their prejudice. Well, let me tell you something, As a black person, i have heard Costa Ricans say more than af few times. they don’t like white people. I don’t know why white people think that prejudice only relates to people of color or a particular lifestyle. Even a lot of Black people in America think Africans do not like them. which is untrue. Most Africans look up to African Americans, and if anyone they do not like it is white people. They call British people the king of the Racists, but like you said Michael they won’t say it to your face.

  15. When I get to Costa Rica — I wish someone would call my beautiful brown skin “black”, or objectify & dehumanize me by referring to me as a “blacks” I’m leaving America because I’m tired of its racist skin label. But Americans carry their stinking thinking everywhere they go. Don’t let the brainwashed fool you — there are many of us who wish a mtfker would.

  16. Same, tired of black people discriminating against white people. Tired of them not giving me same rights.
They can open black radio, black TV, black groups.. but if I open any of them and call white radio, white TV or white group right away I’m attacked and called racist, see how it is? 😤 not that I care to open that just using as an example. They got to stop this hate.

  17. Mike, this little house we’ve been staying in near Chachagua is for sale. I’d like to see it listed on your real estate channel. The owner is a friend of ours and she’d really like to sell it. How do I go about that? Should I email you?

  18. Mike, you make a great point in spelling out the difference between prejudice and discrimination. I’ll be leaving the US soon and moving to Costa Rica with my daughter and my mom (we’re black/Hispanic and my daughter is bi). When explaining the move to others, I tell them that there’s prejudice and racism everywhere, but it’s not deadly everywhere and that makes all the difference.
